Vanessa Lindsey – Practical Emotional Intelligence Skills

Vanessa Lindsey Twenty–eight–year–old Vanessa Lindsey lives in Norwich and works as a Web Communications Officer at Norfolk County Council. Vanessa is also a freelance proofreader and translator. She loves tap, modern and ballet dancing and also has a number of other interests that keep her busy including, travelling, live music, pilates, cooking, eating out and spending quality time with friends.

Vanessa came across vision2learn whilst searching the Internet and was immediately interested in the Practical Emotional Intelligence Skills course.

"When I first became interested in the subject of Emotional Intelligence a few years ago, it was unusual to see a course on it. So, when I found the course on the vision2learn site, I was really keen to give it a go, especially as I could learn in my own time and it was free."

The Practical Emotional Intelligence Skills course has really helped Vanessa to become more self–aware and improve her personal and work relationships.

"This course has helped me to be more observant of my own emotional behaviour, to be more aware of my own underlying feelings and beliefs that govern this behaviour, to break habits and to manage my emotions effectively."
"I have also learnt to observe more keenly, and be sympathetic to, the emotions of others. By putting these new skills into practice, I am improving my personal and working relationships all the time."

Vanessa appreciated the flexibility of learning online in her own time. She said:

"The main benefit of learning online is that you can go along at your own pace and spend more time on the things you personally find difficult and less on the things you find come more naturally – all in the comfort of your own home! Although I enjoy the social side of being in a classroom, the vision2learn learning environment has a message board where other learners on your course can post messages and problems and offer help and advice."
"Overall, this course offered a really accessible way of developing personal and professional qualities."

Vanessa found some aspects of the course challenging, but soon overcame them with a little determination and perseverance.

"Sometimes I found it difficult putting EI techniques into practice at work, and, as I had only recently joined my team, it was difficult to recognise colleagues' reactions. I overcame this by first trying things on family and friends. Once I realised what I should be looking for, it made it easier to make comparisons at work."

She could also run any problems past her online tutor, who was always available to offer help and advice.

"It was good to know you have a tutor who you can consult at any time and it gives you confidence. My tutor gave me very good feedback on each assignment so I always knew when I was on the right track or where I needed to develop my skills."

Vanessa has taken a really pro–active approach to her learning and is a great example of what you can achieve when you put your mind to it.
